The PIPE guard tour data recorder is torture-tested in a microwave

Can your guard tour system do this?

August 7, 2010

We recently posted our first two PIPE torture tests. In one, our engineers drive around town with a PIPE tied to their bumper. In the other, we cook The PIPE in a microwave oven for five minutes.

Security officers do all sorts of things to avoid doing their patrols. In our previous post (Scannergate) officers created copies of the bar code checkpoints to avoid their patrols. Less creative guards often try to destroy the patrol wand.

Microwaving is a time-honored method of destroying the guard tour reader. It's a big problem with plastic guard tour readers, and one of the big weaknesses of RFID guard tour systems. It happens so frequently to some brands that at least one manufacturer has added "microwave detection resistors" to their product. These have no other function than to confirm the reader was microwaved and void the warranty.

We have a better solution: Get a guard tour system that can stand up to the punishment!
