What business are you in?
We are in the cranberry business! It is mostly juice, but we also have some food business with cranberry-raisins and cranberry
sauce. We also have some breakfast cereals that use our cranberries.
So, this is a juice bottling plant?
No, we do not do any juice bottling here. We are the Corporate Headquarters Office Complex. There are 550-600 employees
here. They are in many different departments. The departments include mine, which is Office Services, as well as Communications,
R&D, Customer Marketing, and Sales Operations.
Can you tell me about your history with the company?
I have been here for fourteen years. I started in my current position, which is Facilities Manager, two months ago. Previously,
I was the Maintenance Supervisor. My responsibilities have changed quite a bit. They have gone from "hands-on" to more managerial.
I used to maintain the grounds and the building. I am currently in charge of the buildings, and the systems in the buildings.
This includes plumbing, lighting, and heating. I oversee the vendors that come into the building to work here. I am also
in charge of the grounds themselves. I make sure they are mowed and pruned.
How many buildings are at your facility?
There are two separate buildings. There is the Agriculture Building and the main building. The Agriculture Building does
research on pesticides and insects to help the growers. They have a couple of greenhouses where they test various plants
to see how things will grow on an actual farm.
How many officers are there?
There are about 10 officers that are subcontracted out. It can vary, but it is usually around 10 including the officer in
charge.
How many patrols are there on the grounds?
There are five tours over a 24-hour period during the workweek. On weekends, they do 12 tours over a 24-hour period. During
the workday, there is only one officer covering the entire grounds. The reason for this is because we are all here then,
too. So, we help out with anything that might come up. But we usually do not have any problems.
At night there are three shifts. The first one is the Captain of the guards. The second and third night shifts have two
officers patrolling the grounds.
Is there a fixed route?
Yes, they do the same tour at the same time every day. We only do outdoor tours at night. During the day, if there is a
problem, the security officer calls me. We mostly only worry about the loading docks, and visitors into the building. We
do not have any locks or security on the doors to get in. The entrance opens up into an impressive atrium where the receptionist
sits and greets all guests. We do not have any problem with uninvited visitors because the driveway leading to the building
is about a half mile long. We have security cameras along the driveway. There are cranberry bogs all along the driveway
that provide additional security.
Where are the buttons located?
I have put some up outside at various locations. There is one on the garage at the Agriculture Building. This is where we
keep the company truck and other things such as the lawn mower. We also have one on a sign at the main entrance. There is
another on a
light pole at the front of the driveway. This is where we have waste pumps that the officers check to make sure they are
working properly. There is also one outside the Agriculture Building that ensures us the officers went there to check. Since
there is no one around at night, it would be easy to by-pass this without The PIPE.
There are a total of 28 buttons throughout the inside of the building. They are spread out all over, which lets us know
that the officers are doing their tours.
How are the reports used and by whom?
All the officers know how to use the software; they are all trained on it. We print the reports at least once a week. But,
if we need to review them more, we print them as needed.
What kind of security issues do you face?
Making sure that nothing is missing from the building. Sometimes we get complaints that something was taken, but 99% of
the time we find it later. Another issue is when a car is parked in the wrong place. Security has a record of all employees'
cars, and sometimes new cars are not recorded.
We have a waste pump and when something is wrong, a light goes on. Sometimes the pump is overheated. We also have some broken
lights, and people driving off the driveway because the road is very curvy.
What has The PIPE solved for you?
The fact that it tracks the officers and makes sure they are doing the rounds. It makes them check the areas that they are
supposed to.
