Resolution

Restart the PC.

Verify that the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server is not compressed or encrypted:

  1. Open Computer (Windows 7) or File Explorer (Windows 8, Server 2012)
  2. Right-click the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server and select Properties.
  3. On the General tab, click the Advanced button.
  4. In the Compress or Encrypt attributes section:
    1. Clear the Compress contents to save disk space checkbox.
    2. Clear the Encrypt contents to secure data checkbox.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Re-run the Guard1 Plus Configuration Application by right-clicking its shortcut and selecting Run as administrator.

The proprietary Guard1 Plus SQL SysAdmin (sa) password is a 12-character alpha-numeric password. If your network security policy requires passwords longer than 12 characters, you must temporarily disable the policy on the Guard1 Plus PC to allow SQL Server Express to install.

  1. Close all open windows.
  2. Press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard.
  3. In the Run dialog, type SECPOL.MSC and press Enter.
  4. In the left pane of the Local Security Policy window expand Account Policies, then click Password Policy.
  5. In the right pane, double-click Minimum password length. Note the current value.
  6. Change the number of characters value to zero.
  7. Double-click Password must meet minimum complexity requirements. Note the current setting.
  8. Select Disabled.
  9. Click Apply.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Re-run the Guard1 Plus Configuration Application by right-clicking its shortcut and selecting Run as administrator.
  12. SQL Server Express should install successfully.  When finished configuring Guard1 Plus, continue to Step 11.
  13. In the Local Security Policy window, repeat Steps 5-10, changing the number of characters value in Step 6 and the complexity requirement setting in Step 7 back to the original value.
  14. Close the Local Security Policy window.

The SQL Server Express installer will create and attempt to start the MSSQL$GUARD1PLUS service. The logon account for this service is NT Service\MSSQL$GUARD1PLUS. If your network security policy prevents this account from logging on as a service, your Network Administrator must create an exception to provide the logon as a service privilege for the NT Service\MSSQL$GUARD1PLUS account.

Symantec Antivirus 12.1 and McAfee VirusScan are known to block all or some of the activities performed by the SQL Server Express installer. Disable all antivirus and antimalware software, then re-run the Guard1 Plus Configuration Application by right-clicking its shortcut and selecting Run as administrator.

Verify that you have at least 20GB free space on drive C:\. If you have less than 20GB free space on drive C:\ you must uninstall other applications, delete unnecessary files, or otherwise increase the available drive space so that you have the minimum 20GB free space required for the installation and database storage.
