What is your title and overall responsibility?
I am the Facilities Engineer. I am responsible for modifications to the facilities. This is in regard to our plant and the
other buildings. I am responsible for taking care of any maintenance activity. I coordinate with the staff to get things
repaired. These are things such as changing light bulbs, replacing the air conditioning, or adding air conditioning units.
It could also be modifying offices or moving people around.
I am also in charge of environmental compliance and security. I do many things relating to the environment. These include
air pollution permits, and reporting to the EPA. I do storm/water pollution prevention, hazardous waste prevention, and
other things of this nature. I handle pretty much all of the environmental compliance work. I am in charge of pretty much
anything dealing with the buildings and operation of the facility.
Is Porter-Cable/Delta Machinery a manufacturing site?
Yes, it is a manufacturing facility. We make hand-held power tools. Most of the tools we make are for woodworking. These
are power tools and circular saws that have the Porter-Cable name on them. They are professional grade, high-quality power
tools. They are higher-priced tools, not for the everyday consumer. People that make their living using tools have our product.
I know that cabinetmakers and construction sites use them. Our tools are mainly sold at Home Depot and Lowe's. But, Sears
sells a few of them as well. Our products are sold through outside stores. But, we also have our own stores.
In our plant, all the manufacturing is for hand-held power tools. At other facilities, they manufacture tabletop or free
standing, stationary tools. These tools are under the Delta Tools name. They are sold mostly to professionals, but Delta
Machinery also has a consumer product line.
How is the facility set up?
We have a 650,000 square foot warehouse, or distribution center. We also have corporate offices here as well. There is a
total of 1.2 million square feet. There are a total of three buildings, with one floor in each. We have over 1,300 employees
here.
What type of security do you have at Porter-Cable/Delta Machinery?
We have installed security cameras, and put security gates in. We also installed Guard1.
We used to have the mechanical watch clocks. But, we switched to your system so we could get better reports. It is more
understandable than the tapes that come out of the old system.
What kind of security issues are you looking for?
We are primarily looking to make sure that there is no leaking water, the doors are secure, and fire protection is working.
Most of the buttons are near sprinklers. The guards are checking to make sure there is nothing unusual going on. It is not
really security so much. It is just to walk through the plant and make sure everything is okay. It is a big place and there
is a lot to check.
Who chose the Guard1 System?
I was the one who purchased and installed Guard1 for Human Resources. They take care of the
day-to-day operation of the system. I talked to the guard service company that we use here to find out which guard tour
system they have used and had the most luck with, and which one they found the most durable. They recommended
Guard1. They said it is the simplest, least problematic, and most foolproof. It is a great system.
How many officers work there total?
There are nine guards and three guard posts here. Two of the three guard posts are manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The other one is manned 24 hours a day, five days a week. This one is only manned five days a week because it is at an entrance
where all the employees come in. On the weekends, there are fewer employees working, so there is no need to have the guards
posted there. The other posts take care of that one on the weekends. The employees are allowed to come in on the weekends,
but they have to use another entrance. We have key-card access at the corporate facility, but not at the distribution center
or factory. We are working on it, though.
Do the officers stay at the posts, or do tours as well?
The guards do tours during unoccupied times. This would be during the weekends or late at night. They do not do them during
the regular day because there are so many people here; there is not really a need for them to do a walk-through. When there
is no one here, they do tours every hour or two. These tours are fixed routes. Each post does the same tour and the other
posts watch out for the empty post.
Do you use a lot of buttons and PIPEs?
We have about 50 buttons installed. We also own two PIPEs. The Human Resource Manager has all of the software and the PC.
He keeps one PIPE in his office and issues the guards one PIPE. So, they go and make the rounds on the weekends. Then, on
Monday morning they drop off one PIPE and pick up the empty one. We are continuously swapping them out. This also gives
us an extra PIPE, in case something goes wrong with one of them. But, luckily nothing ever has.
